Identification and Property Custody
A third function under the purview of the Professional Standards Commander is the Identification and Property Custody Section. The two Community Service Officers responsible for the day-to-day operations of this component took in over 8,700 pieces of property during 2016. Another 1,612 items were returned to their rightful owners, and an additional 983 items that remained unclaimed or were no longer required as evidence were destroyed. Further, evidentiary items from 681 cases were submitted for analysis to Illinois State Crime Laboratories, including 203 cases involving drug evidence, 109 incidents in which DNA was recovered and 89 cases where fingerprints were processed. The Identification and Property Section also processed licenses for cab drivers in the Village, as well as liquor licenses for new Village establishments.
